Frequently asked questions
Q: How frequently should I have driving tuition?
A: We recommend regular driving tuition, once or twice a week with practice in between. CSM provide 1, 1.5 or 2 hourly lessons.
Q: How many lessons will I need to pass my test?
A: This depends on your age, ability, previous experience and whether you are able to regularly practice your driving skills and techniques provided by your driving instructor. The average is between 25-35 lessons.
Q: When can I take my theory test?
A: Either before you start your lessons or during your course of driving tuition. You have a two year period from the date you pass your theory test to pass your driving test. If this is not achieved then you will be required to retake your theory test.
Q: Do you book the theory and driving tests for me?
A: This can be done directly by you through the Gov.UK website or by your instructor. If you are making the booking yourself we recommend that you liaise with your instructor during the process to ensure his/her availability.
Q: How long will I have to wait for a test?
A: Approximately 3-4* weeks for the theory test and between 6-8* weeks for the practical test. However these timescales can vary from week to week depending on demand at the individual test centre.
*based on Sutton Coldfield test centre.
Q: What will I need to bring with me to my first driving lesson?
A: Your Provisional Driving Licence, consisting of the photocard. If you have the old paper style licence then you will also need to bring another form of ID. If you wear glasses or contact lenses then please ensure that you wear them for your driving lessons. It is a requirement of your driving test that you are able to read a modern number plate from 20 metres away (20.5 metres for old style plates). Our instructors will ensure that you are able to meet the DVSA requirements on your first lesson.
